TARUS Products of Michigan, USA, built the first-ever purpose-designed gun drilling machine in 1973, and TARUS gun drills remain the most widely used in the North American mould and die industry today.
Gun drilling is a deep-hole drilling process that produces exceptionally straight, precise holes far beyond what a conventional twist drill can achieve. The drill starts through a hardened guide bushing, which is the critical element that keeps it perfectly aligned as cutting begins — before the drill has enough length in the hole to guide itself. Coolant is then pumped through the hollow drill shaft to the cutting tip, flushing chips back out along the shaft exterior and keeping the hole clear even at depths many times the drill diameter. It’s the standard method for cooling channels in injection moulds and die-cast dies, where straight, deep holes are critical to part quality.
This GD 4860 features a 48″ × 60″ table, 48″ vertical carrier travel (Y axis), 60″ horizontal table travel (X axis), and 84″ drill depth travel (Z axis), with a 30,000 lb (13.63 metric tonne) workpiece capacity. It’s fitted with a TPI 8000 CNC control — a system TARUS itself developed.
This is a precision column-type horizontal spindle travelling table drilling machine, providing deep hole drilling penetration capability with speed and accuracy.
